We All Pay for Facebook

While looking at some old musings I had written in the past I found this one which I think is particularly relevant today.

Social media consumes time and therefore by extension, wealth.  If for example, we spent as much time performing some task that creates wealth as we do on Facebook, we could create wealth for ourselves instead of for Mark Zuckerberg.

Creating wealth is simply the act of producing something of value.  Watching cat videos and knowing what your best friend had for lunch may be okay for the first 15 minutes or so but after that you are wasting time that could be productive.  So instead of vegetating in front of a computer screen one could prepare a meal from scratch using fresh ingredients.  This would not only be healthy, but the value of the prepared meal would be significantly higher than that of the ingredients by themselves.  Making improvements in your home or property would also increase the value of both.

I am currently reading three books that will improve my value to my employer which provides both job security and the potential for an increased salary.  Admittedly the real reason I am reading these books is because I love the subject matter; but that in no way invalidates the fact that I am still creating value and thus wealth.  On days when I spend more than 15 minutes on Facebook I feel as though I just watched something of value get accidently flushed down the toilet.
